100 Days!
We reached 100 Days of School on March 11th! We had plenty of classroom activities and fun and fashion to celebrate the day.
Helping the Homeless
Our students' efforts to collect hygiene donations for the homeless got a write up in the local papers, The Spirit and Our Town. Our Gratitude Groups have been a wonderful way to stay connected to each other and to our community this year. For a video with more photos from this donation drive, click here.
Gratitude Groups
A group of parents in our school formed a Gratitude Group to express thanks to our amazing teachers and staff. Everyone at the school received beautiful gift baskets and hand written cards from the children.
Hot Off the Press!
Our 4th and 5th Graders took it upon themselves to launch a school newspaper and now, the first edition of "90th Street News" is published! The students worked hard with interviews, editorial, and layout with supervision and assistance from Ms. Siddiqui and Mr. Schwed. Take a peek inside to read the stories about our school opening, interviews with teachers, poetry and songs in Spanish and Chinese, health tips, sneaks peeks into our pods, the Thankful Diary and a special interview with Ms. Nasreen. 90th St. News Issue #1
School Start 2020
After months of careful planning, we were thrilled to be able to open our school for 100% in person learning. We organized our students and teachers into different groups based on language choice and age group. We are so grateful for the efforts of our teachers and staff, and for the support of all of the parents in our community. Welcome to a year unlike any other!
A visit from the Monkey King
Our Lunar New Year celebrations included a wonderful performance by Junqing Li, portraying the famous Beijing opera character the Monkey King. He taught our students some moves, and everyone gained a deeper understanding of this unique tradition.
Chinese New Year Celebration 2020
Welcome to the Year of the Rat (or Mouse)! Our celebrations always span a few weeks -- our Chinese language students create art, design special t-shirts, do calligraphy, and rehearse for their big performance, attended by parents and guests. This year, the students sang, recited poems, played the hulusi, and danced.
Diwali 2019
We celebrated Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Light. Our students learned about this ancient festival, then created beautiful rangoli (sand patterns) and paper lanterns while one of our parents drummed with our teachers.
International Day 2019
The last day of school is a day of multicultural celebration at IANY. Dressed in clothes that represent their cultural background, our students began the day with a parade. Then, there were performances in Spanish, Chinese and English, followed by workshops (representing Ghana, Sudan, Sweden and Peru) and a potluck lunch. It was a beautiful sendoff!
La Vuelta al Mundo en 80 Dias
Our annual end of year performance by our Spanish language learners this year was "Around the World in 80 Days," performed entirely in Spanish. The students and their teachers worked hard all spring to put the show together, and they brought down the house!
Chinese New Year Celebration 2019
Our annual Chinese New Year performance is a celebration of our bilingual program. Our Chinese language students sang, danced, talked about traditional foods and also handed out envelopes filled with gold coins (the chocolate kind). We wish everyone a happy, healthy year of the Pig!
Art Exhibit "Growing Community"
"Growing Community" is our month-long art exhibit on display at The Gallery at W83. At the opening, our Kindergarten through Grade 3 students presented their art pieces in English, Chinese and Spanish. Teachers Dr. Gao and Sra. Cuadrado spoke to parents about the Academy's unique art curriculum that also encompasses Chinese and Spanish language and culture.
Performance at the CGCC Gala 2019
We were honored to be the only school asked to participate in the annual gala for the China General Chamber of Commerce. Seven of our Chinese language learners performed traditional songs and our music teacher Jiaoyue Lyu played piano in front of a crowd of more than 400 attendees. This was a global awards ceremony celebrating meaningful relationships between the US and China. Click here to see the entire performance.
Holiday Jam with Mister G
Latin Grammy Award winner Mister G performed to a huge crowd at our school in November. Everyone danced and sang along to original music sung in Spanish and English. In lieu of tickets, attendees donated canned goods for Food Bank NYC.
Music Video Premiere
September 21st, 2018
A few of our Chinese language students from Pre-K and Grade 2 worked hard last spring to learn a popular song by the group S.H.E. The result is this remarkable music video, which also features our Chinese music teacher, Jiaoyue Lyu, playing the guqin. We gathered for the premiere on September 21st. Well done! The Wizard of Oz / El Mago de Oz
June 1st, 2018
Our Spanish language students had a magical performance of The Wizard of Oz / El Mago de Oz, performed entirely in Spanish. It was a great combination of our immersive language, music, and art programs at the Academy.
